Trades People Blog

Do tradespeople really earn more than graduates?

You might have already heard, that a trades person can earn more than a college graduate. And perhaps you considered it just a phrase, that should attract young people to apprenticeship. If so, you had been wrong, as that statement is true. But how is this comparison now in 2022?

For a long period of time it was thought, that the only good path to a well-paid job lead through university. But that is certainly no longer truth. While university students have to pay high tuition fees and start earning money only after they graduate, those, who do apprenticeship can earn some money while still gaining practical work experience. And that is not all.

So how much do graduates earn in average?

Well, of course there are more factors that influence how much money will a graduate earn, like company, that will employ them, location or type of industry. In general, the overall average graduate yearly salary in the UK in 2022 is £24,000, according to HESA (Higher Education Statistics Agency).

Yet this is just an average figure and it can vary a lot, depending on the field, in which one graduates. For example, art graduates will only start at £15,000 yearly, yet those who choose more complex and complicated fields like dentistry, can start at £38,000 per year.

Now how about skilled trades?

Just like with graduates, also with trades people depends their average salary on more factors. Yet, the overall yearly average is in 2022 £28,378. That is over £4,000 more than an average graduate earns!

Also, as gaining experience, many skilled workers can yearly earn £60,000 and even more. And honestly, that is quite an attractive figure!
