At the Farnborough Airshow in Hampshire, Sir Keir Starmer announced his plans to address Britain’s reliance on foreign workers in construction and other sectors.
To tackle this issue, Skills England, a new agency focused on reforming skills training, has been established. This agency will collaborate with employers, unions, colleges, and the Migration Advisory Committee to efficiently identify areas with shortages of skilled workers. Skills Minister Jacqui Smith mentioned that the project would involve better utilization of existing funds without the need for additional funding.
The Prime Minister’s new initiative responds to criticism of the current Apprenticeship Levy, which has accumulated over £2 billion since 2017 that remains unused. The new Growth and Skills Levy will grant employers more flexibility to use the funds for staff training. Additionally, companies will be allowed to allocate 50% of their levy contributions to training employees of any age.
