WorldSkills competition – the Olympics for trades people

Did you know, that skilled trades people have even their own version of Olympics? Ever since 1946, when global economics needed to boost up after WWII, WorldSkills organises an international competition for teams and individuals in disciplines of various skilled trades.

The event is held every two years in cities across the globe. Last one took place in Kazan in 2019 and due to the pandemics was the next event planned to Shanghai postponed from 2021 to October 2022. Participants from 85 countries will compete in 65 disciplines, trying to win gold, silver or bronze medal.

Achievements of the UK

The last event in Kazan participated 37 competitors from the UK in 32 skills. They managed to get in total 4 medals, including 2 golds. The most successful for the UK was the 2011 championship, which took place in London and where the UK competitors won 13 medals.

Skills included

Competitions are held in various skills, that are divided into 6 skill-areas as follows:

  • Construction and building technology – with disciplines like bricklaying, electrical installation, landscape gardening and many more
  • Creative arts and fashion – with disciplines like 3D Digital Game Art or floristry
  • Information and communication technology – including disciplines of cyber security or webdesign
  • Manufacturing and engineering technology – including skills like welding or mechatronics
  • Social and Personal Services – covering for example beauty therapy or cooking
  • Transportation and logistics – with skills like car painting or aircraft maintenance

Want to try your luck?

If you would like to compete at WorldSkills event, you should first start at national level of your skill competition. Check the website of UK branch of WorldSkills, where you will find all necessary information.

Although the competitors shouldn’t be older than 22 years (or 25 years in some skills), you can participate on the event also as an employer or an educator.
